Over his 25-year career, Gary Beecham has experimented with countless methods of manipulating glass through blowing, fusing, and cutting. He is best known for his heavy, thick-walled vessels, incorporating imagery formed by a wide palette of colored overlay rods. A frequent feature is the use of textile patterns, introduced into the crystal glass as it is being blown, to create the illusion of glass fabric floating in the interior. A second or third pattern may appear on one of the vesse's reflecting surfaces. Other pieces incorporate complex millefiori, formed into mosaics of brilliant color.
Gary received his BS in art from the University of Wisconsin and then served for 5 years as an assistant to Harvey Littleton. Now, his technical advice is often sought by both new and experienced glass artists, and his work is shown and appreciated internationally. Despite the demand for his pieces, Gary has decided to remain both designer and maker, with the collaboration of his talented wife, Mary Lynn White. The couple live and work in the mountains of Spruce Pine, NC, whose clear night skies inspired Gary's Expanding Universe Series. "My wife and partner Mary Lynn and I are completely involved in our work, both aesthetically and in making the glass pieces at every stage of execution. The number of pieces we produce is small but personally and artistically satisfying."
