About the Artist

Bandu Dunham began to teach himself lampworking in 1975, when he was still in high school in Dayton, Ohio. While studying chemical engineering at Princeton, he received informal training in scientific glassblowing, and soon made a career commitment to glass. Further studies at Urban Glass, the Pilchuck Glass School, and the Penland School of Crafts permitted him to receive training from American and European masters. With his lampworking skills well developed, Bandu became an independent glass artist. He often teaches workshops in craft schools, and has written a popular text on lampworking.

Bandu specializes in glass goblets that are meant to be functional as well as eye-catching. He is also known for his incredibly intricate lampworked spheres, which are often compared to so-called brain coral. This comparison is apt, given Bandu"s philosophy and interests. "Innocence, vulnerability, and the luminosity of nature are recurring themes...By incorporating odd juxtapositions and bending forms to follow my own quirky sensibility, I express my experience of the natural world through my relationship to the material."
