About the Artist

Susan Gott began working in glass in 1981 and received her MFA from Kent State University in 1992. Her studio is located in Tampa, Florida. Using glass as a sculptural medium, Susan explores ancient imagery, mythology and matrilineal traditions. To convey her interpretations of ancient myths and rituals, Susan uses a variety of casting methods and mold-making techniques. She describes the process itself as intense and ritualistic, "beginning with ladling the molten glass directly from the furnace....Intuitive and spontaneous decisions concerning choice of color or placement of interior inclusions are often made as I work. "

Her glass sculptures are typically enhanced by the application of enamels, metal leaf, or patinas, or by polishing or sandblasting. "The resulting glass work reveals itself in layers by diffusing or transmitting light through the material: transparent or opaque, polished or rough, exposing or disguising the inside." Susan's works successfully convey the power of the ancient and contemporary myths that guide her aesthetic vision.
