David Wilson has maintained an independent glass studio in Burnsville, NC, since 1986. Full time apprenticeships with Stephen Dee Edwards and William Bernstein, both Western North Carolina artists, followed several years of working as an assistant to many of the area's other well-known artists (Gary Beecham, Ken Carder, Rob Levin, and Harvey Littleton).
When combined with workshops at the Penland School of Crafts, and at the Pilchuck Glass School, these experiences provided a foundation for broad-based technical skills and a diversity of interests. Currently, David's work features the use of neon and other sources of internal lighting. The viewer is an integral part of interactive pieces, which await the touch or proximity of a hand to display their hidden attributes of color, movement, and light. These pieces also stand alone as aesthetically pleasing works, without the added attraction of the light show they produce. David also continues to produce more traditional pieces, such as faceted paperweights that portray the earth , moon, or fantasy worlds. He also teaches workshops on "glass and gas" at Penland and various glass conferences.
